Ceramides
Ceramides are the lipids that hold together the cells of the skin's outermost layer: when they're lacking, skin loses water, feels tight, reacts to anything and tolerates actives poorly. A ceramide cosmetic replenishes that cement and is the base of any routine for dry, reactive or dermatitis-prone skin, or skin that's introducing retinol or acids. They do nothing spectacular in a week; they make everything else work better. Look for formulas that combine them with cholesterol and fatty acids, the ratio skin recognises.
