Five myths about botulinum toxin

Botulinum toxin is one of the best-known yet most misunderstood treatments. We clear up the most common doubts.

Five myths about botulinum toxin

Botulinum toxin has been used in aesthetic medicine for more than 30 years with a very high safety profile, yet it's still surrounded by myths. Let's go through them one by one.

Myth 1 — "It leaves your face frozen"

False when it's well applied. The aim isn't to paralyse but to selectively relax the muscles responsible for expression lines. A well-calibrated dose preserves expression and a natural look.

Myth 2 — "Once you start, you can't stop"

False. The effect fades gradually over 4–6 months. If you stop having it, the skin returns exactly to its previous state (in fact, it's usually a little better, having creased less during that time).

Myth 3 — "It's only for older women"

False. It's increasingly used as prevention in people from the age of 28–30 with early expression lines. Preventive toxin slows the formation of deep wrinkles.

Myth 4 — "It's the same as hyaluronic acid"

False. They are completely different treatments:

  • Botulinum toxin relaxes muscles → treats dynamic wrinkles (frown lines, crow's feet).
  • Hyaluronic acid adds volume → treats loss of projection (lips, cheekbones, under-eye hollows).

They're often combined for an overall result.

Myth 5 — "Anyone can inject it"

Absolutely false. It's a medication that should only be administered by trained doctors. Always ask whoever treats you about their qualifications and specific experience with the area you're about to treat.
